Consumers Injured by Chrysler Products

published on 05.28.2009 at 01:59 pm

We have heard dozens of stories on the news in the past few weeks about Chrysler’s bankruptcy and the effect it will have on millions of Americans who are in one way or another creditors of the company. One story which has not received much media attention is Chrysler’s decision to refuse to accept responsibility for its defective products which injure or kill the consumers.  There are hundreds of pending product liability claims against Chrysler which will be extinguished by the bankruptcy court judge if Chrysler and the federal government have their way.  It gets worse. Chrysler will also have immunity for any of its defective products which were sold before the bankruptcy plan is approved and which injure or kill consumers in the future.

Ironically, Chrysler has agreed to honor all warranty claims for its cars sold before the bankruptcy plan is approved.  In other words, if you are driving down the road and your brakes fail but you are not in an accident, Chrysler will pay to have your brakes repaired.  If your brakes fail and you or a family member is injured or dies in an accident, however, Chrysler will refuse to accept responsibility for the harm caused by its defective products.

Chrysler’s conduct and the federal governments decision to support this conduct, is outrageous.  Whatever happened to corporate responsibility?  Whatever happened to companies standing behind the performance of their products?  These folks don’t care about the legal rights of consumers.  All they care about is protecting certain powerful interest groups at the expense of consumers.

Unfortunately, it looks like General Motors is next.  Don’t be surprised to see General Motors and the federal government engage in the same tactics.  The problem will be worse with General Motors since they have a much greater number of cars on the road than Chrysler.

Now is the time more than ever to be extremely careful in your decision as to what vehicle to drive or ride in.  Driving or riding in the wrong vehicle may not only be dangerous to you, it could destroy the financial future of you and your family in the event you happen to be driving or riding in a defective Chrysler or General Motors vehicle.
